About MAXDONE trail cameras

MAXDONE builds compact trail cameras for backyards, food plots, farms and hunting land. Almost every model in the range runs on a built-in rechargeable lithium battery topped up by a solar panel, so a camera strapped to a tree can keep recording for months instead of eating through eight AA cells.

All the current cameras share the same core: a 64MP photo / 4K video sensor, 850 nm low-glow infrared for night shots out to about 65 ft, a 0.1-second PIR trigger and an IP66 weatherproof shell. They differ in how they get power – a separate solar panel you can aim at the sun, a panel built into the top of the housing, or a larger 7,800 mAh battery with a color screen – and you view and download clips through the free TrailCam Go app over the camera's own WiFi hotspot.

Step by step

How to set up a MAXDONE trail camera

Based on the MAXDONE manuals and app guide, rewritten in short steps. Applies to all WiFi models; the HC30D can also be set up with its screen and buttons.

  1. Charge it fully

Before the first outing, charge the built-in battery over the USB-C cable until the indicator shows full. The solar panel then tops it up in the field.

  2. Check the memory card

Most models arrive with a 32 GB microSD card already in the slot. Format it in the camera or app before first use; cards up to 256 GB are supported.

  3. Install TrailCam Go

Install the free TrailCam Go app and allow the WiFi, Bluetooth and location permissions it asks for – they are needed to find the camera.

  4. Pair close up

Switch the camera on and hold the phone right next to it for the first connection. Afterwards the hotspot reaches about 55 ft in open air.

  5. Choose your settings

A good start: motion detection, photo + video, 5-second interval, 10-second clips, medium sensitivity, timestamp on and the correct date and time.

  6. Mount and aim

Strap it to a tree about waist height, aimed along the trail rather than straight across it. Point the solar panel toward the sun and clear twigs that could trigger false clips.

Typically in the box

  • Trail camera
  • Solar panel (solar models)
  • Mounting strap and bracket
  • Screws and wall plugs
  • USB-C cable
  • 32 GB microSD card (most models)
  • User manual

Care and battery

Wipe the lens and PIR window now and then, keep the rubber seal clean and the card slot cover closed. If the camera sits in deep shade, bring it in for a USB-C top-up every few weeks or move the panel to a sunnier spot. Download and clear the card regularly so loop recording doesn't overwrite clips you want to keep.

Quick fixes

  • The app can't find the cameraMake sure the camera is switched on, permissions are allowed and the phone is right next to it. These cameras don't join home WiFi – your phone connects to the camera's own hotspot.
  • Lots of empty clipsLower the PIR sensitivity, remove swaying branches or grass in front of the lens and avoid aiming at a sunny clearing.
  • Battery drains fastShorten clip length, lengthen the interval, check the panel faces the sun and switch off WiFi when you're not in the app.

FAQ

MAXDONE trail camera questions

Do MAXDONE trail cameras connect to my home WiFi or send alerts?

No. They are not cellular or home-WiFi security cameras. Each camera creates its own short-range WiFi/Bluetooth hotspot (up to about 55 ft) that your phone joins through the TrailCam Go app. You walk up, connect and download – there are no real-time push alerts.

Is there a subscription or monthly fee?

No. The TrailCam Go app is free and footage stays on the camera's memory card and your phone; nothing goes through a paid cloud service.

Is a memory card included?

Most listings include a 32 GB microSD card, often already in the slot. The Ink Gray split-panel version is sold without one – check the card on this page. The cameras accept cards up to 256 GB.

What's the difference between the split-panel and built-in solar models?

Split-panel PH960W cameras have a separate solar panel on a cable, so you can hide the camera in shade and put the panel in the sun. PH970S and the green camo models have the panel built into the top of the housing – one unit to mount, but the camera itself needs a sunny spot.

How long does the battery last?

It depends on how many clips are recorded, how long they are and how much sun the panel gets. With the panel in decent light, the 6,000 mAh and 7,800 mAh models are designed to run continuously without manual charging; in deep shade, plan on an occasional USB-C top-up.

How good is the night vision, and does it glow?

The cameras use 850 nm low-glow infrared LEDs with a range of about 65 ft. You'll see a faint red glow when they fire, but there is no white flash, so most animals carry on undisturbed.

Are they waterproof?

The housings are rated IP66 – protected against heavy rain, snow and dust. Keep the side covers and card slot closed when the camera is outside.

Which model has a screen?

The HC30D has a 1.77" color screen and buttons on the back, so you can change settings and review clips without a phone. The other current WiFi models are set up and viewed only through the app.

Why do some cards show the same rating?

Amazon groups some colors and the 2-pack of the same camera into one listing with a shared review pool. Where that happens, the card says the rating is shared.

Can I use one as a security camera?

Yes, many owners use them on driveways, gardens, barns and building sites. Just remember footage is stored locally and has to be collected by walking within app range – it is not a live remote monitoring system.
